It is a chatroom, so it could be valid to describe it as a room. A room, can be somewhere in which something is put, as can a box. BUT unlike a chatroom or IRC chan, the SB is a small component of a forum, again as it is part of a page, it can be described as a box. Therefore it is part of the forum where things are put, in this case chat. If you consider the other words that could be used to describe chat, and an SB being merely a component of a forum, it's original intention is to literally be somewhere that you "shout".
