silly adsl speed modem question

ive got a 2mbps connection(or will have on 6th dec((new flat)))and i have got a allied data copper jet 800 tornado adsl modem. Now when i used to use it on a 2 mbps line at my old house it worked fine but i wonder if i am being a pleb cos it said on my connection status that its running at 800.0kbps.
does that mean its running at 8 mbps and thats fine cos my line is 2mbps or is it telling me that i have a 2000k line and a modem that can only handle 800k therefore losing 1200 k of my speed???????

Or am i talking bollox and just pissed orf cos my bro wiped hl2 of my comp......the little bastard grrrrrrrrr

irish broadbad are providing 3mbit services ( something like 390k/s , both upload and download) and it will set u back something like 200 euro a month here take a look

I suggest you try a place like http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ and select the speedtest on the left hand menu, that will give you a relativly accurate rate.

if 3mbps is about 390 kbps then if i can have a max speed of 800kbps (according to my modem) then my 2mbps line is well within that range so i think its cool guys.

Messed up?? 3mbps is not 390kbps, it should be 3000kbps, if you are not talking about kBps which is kilo Bytes per second and not kilo bits per second
3mbps = 375kBps (8 bits = 1 Byte)

BTW in sweden I pay 40 Euro for 5mbps up/1 mbit down, in france I get 8mbps in both directions or 20 Euro for 2mbps.

DVS, it sounds like you will need a new modem, as 800kilobits is 0.8MBit and would give about 90kbyte/second downloads which is about a third of what you should be getting.
