How do I find my current spec? I'm not the techno-whizz I may have made myself out to be, and I thought you couldn't use laptop bits for a PC?

oops, I figured you already had a PC sitting around somewhere.

If you go for an Athlon 64, get socket 754 and a motherboard to match.

Professor Plum with the what in the where now?
Zeph
28th December '04, 16:06
There are different versions of the Athlon 64 and asociated motherboards, an older variety with 939 pins on the bottom of the CPU and a newer variety with 754 pins on the bottom of the CPU and socket on the motherboard, the newer variety is cheaper as the 939 is usually asociated with the Dual Processor OPTERONS and the expensive high end Athlon FX-50 series. Go for socket 754 and spend less money.

Of course. I understand perfectly.

If you want to buy a PC, you have to research into, whats available, whats cheapest, what you get for your money and it doesnt hurt to learn a bit of terminology. Go! Read!

are u sure the 754 are newer than the 939, the 743 CPU's/mobos are cheaper that the 939
but i might as well be wrong

Tracius

Socket 940 is for the older Opterons and AthlonFXs but requires registered memory
Socket 754 is for the original and some current Athlon64s and doesn't support dual channel memory
Socket 939 is for the newer AthlonFXs and 64s and supports unregistered dual channel memory.

Prices are from kustom. This is the kind of thing I'd put together. The only thing I'm not too sure about is the Gfx card and the Ram. The case is lush though....

Hayl0 I checked your blueprints over with someone on another forum and they said this to me.
"I was reading that the Canterwood based motherboards are starting to show there age a bit. Sir EEvil are you interested in 64-Bit 1337'ness. I mean for 90 quid you get a fantastic MSI 64-Bit Socket 939 mobo, and for 180 you get a 64-Bit 3200+ with socket 939 interface - which will absolutly fly."

I thoroughly recommend 64 bit Athlons, they rock.

I might check this out tomorrow, but might only be able to purchase it Friday/Saturday as I get paid. I don't want another Celeron [Had one with old comp] so would that mean anything else would have to be changed?
They have the Dimension 3000 for about £360 with a pentium 4 but naturally today is the last day at that price. But fiddling around with the 2400 specs could be cheaper right?
Zeph
6th January '05, 08:40
Just try playing with the specs until you're happy. It cant hurt.
Rogue

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/desktops_Q4_W10_dimen_3000_D01302?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&l=en&s=bsd
It seems a bit better at a tiny increase in price, but with VAT I'm guessing 350

Crap amount of RAM
No DVD ROM or Rewriter of any kind
no floppy drive
no soundcard
The list goes on :)

If it was remixed to have
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT technology (3.0GHz, 800fsb, 1MB cache)
3.5in 1.44MB Floppy Drive [add £20.00] Dell Recommended
48X DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
Creative Labs SB Live 5.1 Sound Card
512MB Dual Channel DDR400 (2x256MB)
£514
Excludes VAT & Shipping
Suddenly seems less appealing now. Final price comes to £661.55. I could probably just upgrade my laptop for that?
The weird thing is that on the previous page it says it's from £299 up not including Vat and delivery, but if you opt to customise it, it jumps to £388 excluding Vat and delivery.
Zeph

The only components you can upgrade in a laptop are the Memory and Hard Drive, so you're not exactly spoilt for choice.
Rogue
7th January '05, 15:28
Is there much point then if for example you have a wank graphics card or something?
