When i get a job, i'm gonna get an Athlon 64 3500 939 (Winchester), prolly a Gigabyte or ASUS MoBo and a Thermaltake Shark case.

deathlabs, I think it might be a good idea to read this months custonPC magazine.
This month they revieved every single CPU currently on the market AMD and Intel, might help you make a choice.
In short tho, CustomPC mag recommends getting a AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 939) 3000+ or 3200+ with a Winchester core, due to it's overclockability.
AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 939) 3000+ = £102.58 @ www.scan.co.uk
1.8GHz, Winchester Core, 200MHz FSB, Cache: L1=128KB, L2=512KB
AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 939) 3200+ = £133.15 @ www.scan.co.uk
2.0GHz, Winchester Core, 200MHz FSB, Cache: L1=128KB, L2=512KB
This leaves you about £160 to buy a new mobo and case
Hope this helps

go 939- definitely! Means you can get cheaper RAM and more up to date modern mobo.
754 is yesterdays stuff.

From an article somewhere:
This new CPU socket will bring dual channel DDR-400 memory abilities to the Athlon64 processor, and also the ability to run dual channel memory without the need for ECC/Registered memory. Previously, only the more expensive Athlon64 FX and Opteron processors could run dual channel memory, and they needed more expensive (and slightly slower) ECC/Registered memory in order to do so. This will allow new Socket-939 Athlon64 and Athlon64 FX processors to run with faster, lower-latency standard DDR modules, and allows a memory upgrade path for those looking to make the move to a new Athlon64 system, but do not want to toss away their current DDR memory modules.

Only thing I know is that the Clawhammer Core has 1MB of L2 Cache

I would also go for Athlon 64 3500 (already have that). Don't know wich Mainboard is the best but I have MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum (socket 939), and have had no other problems except for the monitoring tool is not able to show all the voltages correctly. Have fixed this with "fanspeed" and "webtemp" programs.
Maybe check some reviews at Toms Hardware or Anandtech to find "the best" mainboard.
With regards to the PC case, I just bought Lian-Li v-1000. I have read that there is not enough room for a big PSU such as my OCZ powerstream, but I will try and make sufficient space cause I love the case and cant live without that PSU. Other than that people also say the case will fill up with dust rather quickly. I will install water cooling tomorrow so I dont care too much about dust. I can tell you tomorow if all my spent money is just wasted or if it actually is going to work.
But anyways... I think the MSI K8N Neo 2 Plat. + Athlon 64 3500 will be a good basis for a gaming PC - should also be within your budget. Dont know if there's enough money left for a top of the line high end pc case, but there are many other less expensive cases around.
Best Regards Frank

So far I only had time to modify the Lian Li case so the OCZ powerstream PSU will fit - it was really no big operation. Only had to drill out about 14 rivets to be able to remove one space divider and one rack for Harddrives. If you didn't know it was there from the beginning you won't notice something has been modified.

I might get that Tt fanless PSU. When I get a job that is.
