:) i'm not in fact
i wanted to change some things and add menu/buttons for launching apps, i found something with the hud.rss modules but i couldnt work out how to make use of it,
so i gave up and replicated it in Sysmetrix which i've been using for years
the first button on the right unhide desktop icons, and the top one opens a menu of more buttons to toggle the modules and launch apps, only thing is u can't move them

I have windows vista 64bit. i have 6GB of RAM to so im not shy on these running these programs all day long :). I've always been cautious about what im putting on my computer tho.. so if i can trust these desktop themes etc. Where do i start the transformation?? can they easily be uninstalled without leaving any traces??

Samurize is difficult to set up but once you get the hang of it it gets a lot easier- and boy is it worth it! My Desktop is actually useful now- it really does help and all of this does serve a purpose. I'm still working on it though as I want to add a weather montior and also make it a bit more interactive (so clicking on the disk stuff opens an explorer window). I also want more RSS feed stuff...
Plus the falling snow flakes look lovely and pile up on the bottom of the screen.

I'm on 64bit Vista with 4Gb Ram and it runs fine including running windowblinds and Dreams (the animated desktop package). If it does slow anything down I have not noticed- Vista is a temperamental sob anyway!
There are various ways you can create such desktops- one way is using DesktopX (google anything you dont know), but I find that a bit unstable and unwieldy. I am using Samurize for my one above and that puts all the RSS feed, google mail counter, system monitors etc on the desktop. It is very powerful but has a bit of a steep learning curve to begin with.
Anything you put on should be very easy to uninstall. The one exception are the custom themes you find littered here and there (transformation packs etc). A good place to start though is to download the demos for the various stardock apps (windowblinds, iconpackager, etc etc). They are safe and can be uninstalled guaranteed with no crapware or traces (unless you use a crack- v dodgy).

do u have to buy all these programs i.e. stardock, Samurize etc.
happynoodleboy
23rd February '09, 15:36
Samurize is free. Stardock ones yes you can buy them- or you can use the freeware versions which are obviously cut down versions of the real thing. Some of the stardock stuff is free though I think.
I have the object Desktop package which includes everything. Its about $50 for 2 years or something (I've been a subscriber for years though so I think I get a special deal).

if you cant afford object dock then use rocket dock it has the same functionality, samuraize is very good, rainmeter is easy to use
To get themes to work i used a program vistaglazz
looking at eclipse and lifehacker thats going right down to the care and programming your own desktop.
Best thing is to take it in steps
1. choose a wallpaper
2. choose a theme
3. find a nice set of fonts and icons these may come packaged with a theme you like which would be a bonus,
4. use rocket dock or objectdock
5. then look at programs like samuraize and rainmeter
Read though the readmes that come with anything you download so you know how to use it and implement it.
Goto deviant art and visual styles then vista themes, this is a great resources,
send me a pm, if not im sure HNB would make your desktop awesome, i like minimal =D and plain

btw I'd recomend Fedora 10 personally, Ubuntu is great and friendlier, but they all do quite a lot for you these days anyway.

Nowt wrong with Vista compared to every other version of windows. Not responding is usually down to you memory being hogged by something, try turning off all the non essential start up items to free up some of your memory. Task manager can also give you a good indication of what is happening with your system.
Since when was XP not as buggy as hell and require multiple restarts to fix things?
And sorry for being off topic.

Only problem is that vista requires more memory to run..vista.
But regardless, memory sticks arent that expensive, shouldnt be a problem to get enough, unless you got something hogging it as said. Usually spyware and similar steal abit of your memory doing whatever they are doing as far as i know.

thats just how HUD.vision (and enigma) was put together so you can do what you want with it, there's tons of skins available that are packaged into a single bar though
will hunt around for one then..
bloody annoying to try and understand tho

With samurize you can download a pre-done config or you can just fiddle with it to make on yourself. It takes a bit to learn but once you grab the basics it is pretty simple. Helps if you have a good idea of what you want beforehand though.
