I've erhm...got some movies on my pc and want to burn them on a dvd.
The software I want to use is Nero but some friends say it decreases the quality. :S
Is this true? What other software is better?

If your talking about converting from compressed movie files like avi's (normally DivX or XviD) etc, then you will always lose quality when converting them too DVD. I have tried Nero, and found it can have strange results, like the finished DVD's picture will be upside down, or the sound will be way out of synch. In fact I've tried many programs, like DVDSanta, Avi to DVD, TMPenc, Cucusoft Video convertor etc etc. The only program that gives me the decent results is Intervideo's Windvd Creator 2. Also make sure you have reliable codecs installed, and avoid codec packs like Koepi's, nimo's and Ace. Get hold of the individual codecs from the developers sites, as they tend to be much more reliable. I'm still using an XviD codec from 18 months ago, as I find it gives better results than the latest versions.

i find encoding your avi file to an mpeg with tmpgenc first is your ideal bet then when you have done that you can use tmpgenc dvd author software to author your dvd then burn using the burning tool supplied with the authoring software.
bit of a long winded way of doing it but it works fine for me every time, i also have the xvid settings input in to my tmpgenc encoder so you dont get silly upside down encodes etc.
as i said can take some time with the actuall encoding to mpeg part if u do it on the slowest possible encode but you just let it run overnight when u are sleeping.
its the most reliable way i have found of encoding avi files etc to a dvd.
