Something strange happened this morning when i turned on my PC. It got hung up on startup at the line "Building DMI Pool.....". I hit the reset and it booted up fine. Then I went shopping and switched the machine off. On return fire her back up. Same thing. Hit reset and she got stuck again. a worry enters the head. I reset again and she boots up fine.

So
1) What is DMI pool (Dynamic Memory something mayb; i dunno but it sounds important.)
2) If its beginning to hang at this point does this mean the old lady is on her last legs. (Shes pushing 5 years!)
3)What can i do about it?

cheers for any insight into my PC

DMI = Direct Memory Interface

It usually updates when you put new hardware in as thats exactly what it is a Direct Interface between the System Memory (RAM) and your hardware so a piece of hardware may be on its last legs, have you added anything recently?

put in a wirless network card a couple of weeks back. works fine

Even if the WiFi card works fine there could be a chance it is still slightly dodgy, it could be a RAM/motherboard problem too.

Anyway i could test this problem without gutting the machine and testing each component separately??

Probably the best way of testing it is to take the machine apart bit by bit and put components back in until it has the same problem again.

Emptied PC apart from Graphics card. Still hangs at the "building DMI pool". Heres what it say just before hand at the system config page.

PCI device listing

BusNo DeviceNo FuncNo Vendor/Device Class DeviceClass IRQ
0 7 1 8086 7111 0101 IDE Controller 14
0 7 2 8086 7112 0C03 Serial Bus Controller 10
1 0 0 10DE 0322 0300 Display Controller 11
ACPI Controller 9

Building DMI Pool.....................

What is ACPI controller and should it have values for BusNo, Device No, etc...
If this doen't help, what is my next port of call to try and fix this without spending any money?

Cheers

It appears the battery for the bios is dying. resetting it seems to have done the job temporarily, but a new battery is what the doctor has ordered. Phew.
