Just in case you missed the news towards the end of last week.

In advance of the Counter-Strike: Source update we've mentioned here recently, we'll be releasing an update for Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. This update will include two new weapons (the StunStick and the Slam) as well as a return of the trusty crowbar. We've decided to also include a new map called "Steam Lab."

Right around the same time, we'll be releasing the source code to Half-Life 2: Deathmatch in the SDK.

This release will happen some time next week. Right now, we're shooting for Thursday the 17th.

And just a quick note for those of you who have been asking -- yes, VAC 2 is coming.

Rumour has it that they are already logging through VAC2 and will be doing a mass ban of steam_ids on VAC2 launch for things that are not detected with VAC1 but are with VAC2.

This is partially supported by a valve employee saying that a mass ban is coming

I also heard that the way VAC works is it download the security module on map change or map load,. However, VAC2 will stay resident to make bypassing the module more difficult.

I wonder what the ban length is now going to be since they lowered it from 5 years to 1 year.

I think its the case that if someone cheats on HL2:DM for example, then its not just that game they are banned from, but their steamid is rendered useless.

Erm, am probably going to be shot down in flames by everyone, but will ask anyway.... what on earth is VAC?

Valve anti cheat. Its the security module you see being loaded when you join the server.

That mass ban is that based on old logs of VAC1 or something? Or does everyone getting caught wen VAC2 is running be banned right away?
It is just a question. I do not fear a ban.

From what i have read, it has been suggested that they are running the VAC1 logs through the VAC2 system so those that think they are getting away with cheating because VAC1 cannot detect it will get a shock when VAC2 is launched and they are banned straight away.

My biggest hope for CS is that they actually bring out/port VAC2 for cs 1.6

Already it seems a long time since an update came out for 1.6 - I just hope they dont leave it behind and over concentrate on cs:s as I cant be arsed waiting 2 years until source is actually playable (as in the feel of it, playability wise)

Thats the plan apparently.

I would imagine that they will start to leave 1.6 behind, concentrating more in the future on source until cs2 comes out.
