Since reinstalling XP on a new partition it has been ummmmmmm misbehaving.
Symptoms include unable to shut down PC, it locks up. Unable to use the task manager. But most of all, above all else in order of importance, I cannot install SP2.
I have downloaded it, no problems there. When I install it however it locks up half way through at the point when it says "installing cabinets". Why I need a cabinet in my PC I do not know.
Right now I have a small icon in my taskbar saying "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates". It's very........annoying.
:cold:
The real question on my mind now is will SP2 improve the performance of my PC and it is necessary?
I could leave my PC in this slightly delicate state however it just doesn't feel right.

I tried to install sp2 3 times and all it did was screw up. Same with my Dads PC.
For some people it works- for some it doesnt. Frankly if you have a good firewall and use firefox or another browser SP2 is a bit redundant.

I didn't install it for ages, then when i was re-installing my comp, I slipstreamed SP2 into my existing XP copy and installed it that way. Went like a dream, no probs at all.
Hasn't had any adverse affect on my PC. It crashes every 40mins, but it's done that for years.

You dont need SP2 at all. As long as you have a half decent firewall, and are carefull about what you download, there is little need for it - dont have it installed, although i have put it on my mum and sisters computers no problem. There is a pop up blocker in IE, thats about it....
Are you using a legit copy?
What are your pc specs?
How big is the partition?
How long has XP been installed?

XP was on it when I bought it 2 years ago but I have reinstalled it many times.
could it be a HD failing?

I had issues with installing SP2, so i got a winxp with sp2 cd and that installed fine..

hope not as i cant get my updates to work anymore so cant get sp2
Just turn automatic update off. The only problem being is that if there are any huge updates released that block security holes, then youre screwed.

See me at the next LAN
;)
I use an XP Disc with SP2 Streamlined in so i dont have to install it separately.

And for thos ewho have been avoiding the SP2 update from automatic updates, bad news i'm afraid.
SP2 will be forced down with Automatic updates whether you want it or not.
To be honest, with everyone with SP2, the internet will be a lot safer from Viruses being spread etc.
Hmmm after reading all your posts, I find my computer runs smoothly with Windows XP SP2. Weird.
My computer hasnt been off in 1month. The last time I made a fresh restart was 1 week ago. My comp can run non-stop for at least 5months. :P
I dont recall any crashes. If it does, it will be my fault :)
So why are your comps keeps on crashing?
Partition is 76 MB.
Thats not very big is it? XP needs some free GB's space.

Yeah, looks like the size of the Partition will be the problem. For M$ to update any files that are already installed etc you will need a bigger partition.
