Soup, A: Please don't use "Dark" text, as it was a nightmare to read on the forum theme I use :(. B: Try installing something like Nero. CD Drives use a thing called an ASPI layer. Although I've never heard of XP not recognising a drive, I have come across it in ME, and it was always the Apsi layer that was at fault. Best I can suggest for the mo (More lucidity might come tomorow when the wine affect wears off) :)

You could also try uninstalling the CD drive from Device Manager, reboot the machine and see if it 'magically' reappears in the hardware list. I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of months back and this fixed the problem. I'm not going to bed before I go on holiday so will periodically check the forums during the night.

Check also that the Bios is picking it up as an attached IDE device
