I tend to find Zone Alarm mames your internet/network connection. I find Sygate a better choice, there are a few other good ones too. Or else McAffee Firewall if u want to ahem buy one.

I have Windows XP SP2 running now. If u don't run lots of weird big programs than it should run fine.

huh? How does that help? Running XP's firewall is like using a Chocolate fireguard, turn it off and use Sygate.

Embedded Hardware Firewall Systems are far superior to any software firewall solution. Think of Sonicwall, Alcatel routers with firewalls in them. Those smart small boxes are dirt cheap today.
And when your PC crashes you aren't stuck with a chicken and egg situation e.g. you need windows updates to make your system secure and firewalled.. but you can't connect to the internet cause you don't have any firewall yet.... :)
Those firewalls have web-based interfaces these days so they are very easy to build. It's not like you have to build your own personal firewall box from 2 network cards and a linux distribution. (Like i used to do in the earlier days... yes, i'm wierd :D )
Anyway, Just my 2 cents concerning that topic.

hardware firewalls are way better then any software firewall can ever provide.. and besides.. they last.. no expiration date.. they always work..
and you can reinstall your machine without any worries
