Strangely, the power to my PC doesn't seem to work. Press the switch and nothing, no display, no fans, dead. I have tried disconnecting the on/off switch and connecting the reset switch to the same pins but that didn't work either. I also got the old paperclip out and tried to 'hotwire' it but that didn't work.
There is a led on my motherboard which is on all the time which indicates that it might not be a PSU problem (although I have had problems with it in the past). Anyone got any ideas how I might be able to tell exactly whats wrong and possibly a cheap way of fixing it.
Would say if you are getting no fan action from the PSU that it is that at fault PSU failures can manifest themselves in various ways.. The PSU could still be passing trace electricity through giving you your led on the mobo but it could be one of the rails gone. To be honest easiest way to check is literally to borrow a friends PSU and try it... thats what i'd do anyhoo
Hope it helps... and for gods sake if it is PSU get the mose expensive one you can afford shite PSU's are system nightmare, a good system starts with an good clean and stable power supply... my opinion obviously but I think others will agree..

Good PSU is important indeed..
Concerning your problem with the led.. maybe you got 5 V current but not 12 V current?
It could be Ted[Dude]'s Signature... (amost 1mb in size), pc cant cache properly so downloads every time i reconnect to forums :(

Right, I got a new PSU and its still the same so I'm gonna buy a case and a motherboard. Will I have to reinstall windows if I get a different motherboard?

Yes Bender you have to reinstall it
you dont HAVE to.. but it saves a lot less conflicts with ahrdware and IRQ addresses :P
best way is to reformat, but if u have a load of stuff there you dont want to back up.. then just go back as normal :)

Do I have to reinstall off my original Windows disk? I think I've lost mine... and if I reinstall off a copy, is it still legit?

You can often get away without re-installing Bender. The only way to find out is to plug the drive in and boot your PC up. If it gets to the windows desktop, and it appears to find all the new devices, then it will work fine. If however, it goes to start windows, and you then get the "Blue Screen of Death", then the easiest way to fix it, is to pop in your XP disk, reboot from your CD drive and tell it to repair the current installation. Again, everything will fine, and you won't lose anything. :) I've done this numerous times on many PC's and have yet to have any trouble with them.

all depends what kind of a "copy" you have, some bypass the registration, whilst others register a fake key...
if u borrow someone elses disc and just put ur serial key in.. that will be fine... or d/l an ISO of a proper copy..

That depends on how "legit" your copy of windows is. TBH as long as it isn't a copy of the original "Devil's Own" version of windows, most of them are fine. Just don't install a dodgy copy of windows XP retail, as Service pack 2 breaks it. Always go for the Corporate, or Volume Licence version.

Good news, I got it to work by getting some heatsink paste and taking my CPU out, putting it back and haveing a general clean. Bad news, my graphics card fan appears to have stopped. Anyone know where to get a new one (Asus Geforce 4400 Ti)
What size is the fan, measure it!
