You can make the logo in brice, 3d studio max or cinema and then finnish it in photoshop
3d studio max is a good program, but I personally use Maxon - Cinema 4d Studio Bundle. Both are good

Ngh... anything free and cheap?
Am struggling with bryce- have imported the logo and made it 3d-ish. Looking pretty good... It takes years to render stuff though and It's an absolute pig to use...
I have them both, if you want you can get them from me. No large files.

Bryce worked very well on a celeron 700mhz. Haven't used it on this pc but you can make those 3d tubes and blocks on it and save them as jpg i think. Havenn't used it for anything else yet.
Cinema 4d is really good to finnish wallpapers etc.
A nice sort of art is too make pixelart in 3d....takes time but it has a nice effect

Haox- have pm'd you!
Meteor- I found you can import 2d photoshop objects into Bryce. Just use a bit of alpha shading and you get a nice 3d effect... Here's my first doodle with it anyway:

my uncle has an nth hand copy of 3ds max 4, he also had some books on how to use it. i read the books and its quite easy to use once you figure out what everything does. i made this about a year ago with it

We had to do a bit of 3DS Max (5)stuff for our course. Here's what I came up with:
High poly (5000 I think) house model:

Same house, but lower poly (50???):

Yeah I know they aren't anything special and looking at them now makes me cringe, but I could do a whole lot better if I gave them another go (left them til last minute like all the other work I've done :))
I also did a short animation (1 min) involving a fully rigged troll model trying to catch a butterfly, but I can't find any renders, and can't be bothered to reinstall Max to take some. Unless someone has ~50MB webspace and enough bandwidth to spare, you'll just have to imagine that one :)

that high poly house looks nice, you could stick that in a map, its better than most models in custom maps. i tried some animation, hated it took hours just to get the foot to look right for a walk cycle. as for rigging i found that worse, for the walk cycle i made a 3d stickman thats the only way i could rig it.

as far as free goes, i can highly recomend blender
for commercial have a look at alias wavefront maya. You can download a working copy for free designed for students that has a watermark over images. There's also warez copies of the real thing knocking around, but I wouldn't know about such things

don't rule out learning hammer either, you can turn it into a map when you're done :)
I'm not sure if any of these progams will output gif, but you can certainly move the camera to position and take a screen capture, then drop that into a gif creation tool.

On the subject of 3D rendering and stuff, this guy seems to be doing a nice job of playing with HL2 models. I haven't the foggiest about all the techy stuff there on about, I just like the eye candy. One of you lot might understand it though :)

Thats HDR stuff you have there trout... We should see more of that in the new HL2 level they will be releasing- called the lost coast or something. A bit of a tech demo by all accounts.
I hadnt thought of doing it in hammer but thats not a bad idea.
