View Full Version : A fantasy come true

About 10 years ago I started playing with computers when a very good friend of mine came to live with me, we would spend hours sitting round the keyboard, smoking, drinking, and generally shooting the sh1t. It seemed like those heady days would never end, until the hardware advanced away from ISA towards PCI and games stopped working under the new regime.

Well, earlier this week the same friend sent me an email with a 2 1/2 Mb attachment that has bought those days to life again; namely in the form of a DOS emulator and Pinball Fantasy (the best pinball game ever written). I finally got round to installing both apps today and have been hooked again on this stupidly addictive game, so if any body wants a copy of both (you need the DOS emulator to make the sound work as the game is expecting to interface with an ISA soundcard) give me a shout and I'll post them on my website. The zip even has the original highscores from 'Back in the Day', so you can test yourself against a skill level that not even I have been able to match so far (I appear as ADD in the tables for future reference).

If you want to play DOS games, most will work well with this cool piece of software: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net it requires a bit of patience to set up but is absolutely brilliant once running.

Some games, including most Lucasarts Point n Clicks can be run with ScummVM from www.scummvm.org a very nice piece of software indeed.

Nice post Adster and yes, Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies were great! You can get a LOT of old games from sites such as http://www.the-underdogs.org/

Old games never die.
I still have my 1st computer working, AT, 4 megahertz, no harddrive and 4 colors :)
Now and then I play some of the old games that still work. The disks seem to die after 20 years :)
Some classics I sometimes play are digger, World KArate, Summergames, Wintergames, Platoon, paratrooper, Operation Wolf, policequest 1, larry. I had like thousands but most of the floppy's died.

I've played some oldies with emulators but they don't work like they should. Some made my system crash or some games work too fast or too slow.

U play summer games???? Man I broke 6 joysticks playing that game.....hated it.
U mean worldchampionship karate?
What about old arcade games???? I spent more time in arcades then at home then...
I loved double dragon and shinobi...ow and pitfighter.
And what about real pinball machines, I played Twilight Zone everyday for months when I was 14.

double dragon is one of the best fighting games ever. I had I, II and III. I was the best though. Just walking around and beat everyone up you cross :)
Yes I mean worldchampionship karate. I got a black belt +8 or something. All you had to do was sit in the corner of your screen and press 'm' all the time (low kick). Everytime the computer came near you he'd go down :D :D
Pitfighter was great too but not as cool as doubledragon.
I never went out to the arcade hall much, but Operation Wolf was on of my favs. Almost the 1st one where you could hold a gun and shoot people (and that was BEFORE duckhunt).

Aww man, I miss this game I used to play on my Amstrad CPC464. It was a 2 player side-view motorbike game where you went off jumps an stuff. You could make your own levels and everything! Anyone got any idea what it was called? I plan on remaking it using the (worryingly small amount of) C++ skills my uni course has taught me :D

Wasn't that called "Kickstart", as i used to play it on the C64. There used to be a program of the same name on BBC2 where people had to go over an obstacle course on Trials bikes.

Wait till you boys discover MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator)

I've lost entire weekends to Raiden and Galaga and Gauntlet and.......

MAME rocks, but I never went into arcades as a kid as they always seemed to be full of Michael Jackson a-likes. Atomic Runner would have to be my fave arcade game, although most people don't know it as it was a Japanese import that was in my local skate shop when I was a young un.

Yeah! I think that was it. There was white flamey things ono the ground an stuff. Used to love that and the Scalextric racing game I had, where you could build your own track from pieces then race round it.

And for arcadeyness, you can't beat a few rounds of Samurai Shodown :D

Yep joe the game was kick start it was awsomely bad but so addictive,

another great car game was geoff crammonds stunt car racer c64 or amiga i think

pinball dreams and fantasies brings back lots of memories of me and my bro dodgeing school and playing this all day instead,

however the best karate game was way of the exploding fist c64 gfreat game

but the game of all games for a few beers with your mates and to waste an entire staurday and sat night was sensible world of soccer one of the worst ever looking football games but was so playable and such a laugh, i was so good i used to pass the ball pack to my keeper dribble up the pitch with him and score it was hillarious. that game rocked
